23 April 2010 --- NETTG.PL --- Bogdanka: The plough proves a success
“The first stage of the test run of the new ploughing system, which is intended for the mining of thin coal seams, has been completed. After one month in operation, it achieved the capacity of 8 thousand tonnes of output per day. Bogdanka’s yield of commercial coal has seen a growth effect of approx. 7 percent”, Tomasz Zięba, Spokesman of the company, informed the nettg.pl web portal.
“The plough, after site acceptance test, was started up at Bogdanka on 23 March this year. It is one of the most modern devices of that type in Poland. It is intended for mining thin coal seams, from 1.2 to 1.7 metres high. It permits more effective mining of the deposit by increasing the yield of commercial coal in the total output from the pit”, explains the Spokesman.
The Zofiówka mine, which belongs to Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, had a plough before Bogdanka – with a capacity of 3.5 thousand tonnes per day. The ploughing system for LW Bogdanka was supplied by an American company, Bycyrus – one of the largest manufacturers of mining equipment in the world. The contract signed in April 2009 was worth nearly 40 million euros.
According to Tomasz Zięba, Bogdanka’s investment in mining technology such as the coal plough is one of the most important projects described in the prospectus prepared in connection with the IPO of this first Polish coal mine to be listed at the Warsaw Stock Exchange. From that issue of new shares, the company gained 528 million zlotys for investment purposes.
Implementation of the ploughing system will increase the mine’s industrial resources by approximately 100 million tonnes of coal and will extend the period of deposit mining by as much as 10 years.
“The process of starting up the plough went smooth. In the first stage, it was only necessary to put the finishing touches on the software and adjust the parameters to the soil and mining conditions of the face in the Nadrybie field. At the moment, we are able to determine the initial start-up capacity of the device. Achieving an average of 8 thousand tonnes of output per day in the last week of the test period is a good forecast of further capacity test of the plough to be conducted in May”, says Zbigniew Stopa, Deputy Technical Manager at Bogdanka.
The full capacity of the device started up in Bogdanka is 10 thousand tonnes of coal per day, which should be achieved after 3 months from the start-up. If that is the case, the yield of commercial coal may keep increasing at Bogdanka. That would persuade the company to purchase another ploughing system.
By 2014, through investments aimed at starting mining in the new Stefanów Field, LW Bogdanka intends to increase its output from the current 5.5 million to 11 million tonnes of coal a year. (AZ)
