Poland is an important manufacturer of coal worldwide (9th place in the ranking 2007) and the largest hard coal manufacturer in European Union. About 56% of total coal production in EU takes place in Poland. Poland delivered about 16 million tons of hard coal in 2006 and about 12 million tons in 2007; mainly in form of energetic coal.
The ability of Polish mines to effectively compete with the coal imported to EU member states from the countries situated out of European Union and the competitiveness of hard coal towards other energy carriers will be crucial for the role of Poland as the hard coal manufacturer in European Union.
